  1. What was one of the greatest assets of the Frankish army?
  2. Which peoples were defeated by Charlemagne's armies?
  3. Charlemagne was regarded as the champion of Christianity, who gave him the title of Holy Roman Emperor on Christmas day in 800? Why?

  1. One of the greatest assets of the Frankish army was their use of stirrups. Charlemagne's army defeated the Lombards, Avars, Saxons and Bavarians. http://faculty.cua.edu/pennington/ChurchHistory220/LectureTwo/TimelineCharlemagne.htm
Pope Leo the third Crowned Charlemagne "Holy Roman Emperor" for defending the pope against the Lombards, giving land and money to the Church and for spreading Christianity throughout Europe as he united it. http://www.history.com/topics/charlemagne

Like Constantine (http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/133873/Constantine-I ) Charlemagne achieved political success by aligning himself with the Church. Also the Church gained protection and Christianity was spread further by the Church aligning with a strong leader.
